Doug Lamey has been playing and performing the Celtic Violin for over 2/3 of his life. He is the grandson of the great Cape Breton Violinist William (Bill) Lamey. Bill was an extraordinary musician, recording artist and contributor to the Scottish and Cape Breton heritage in the Boston area for over thirty-five years.Doug's introduction to the Cape Breton Fiddle was an impromptu lesson by Grammy Award winning musician Natalie MacMaster in his Aunt Patricia's kitchen when he was just 6 years old. He then studied Classical and Celtic music for the next decade with faculty and students in the Wheaton College Music Deptartment in his home town of Norton, MA. For most of that time, his teacher was Wheaton's Director of World Music, Sheila Falls Keohane. During that period Doug also attended The Gaelic College in St. Ann's Bay, Cape Breton, The Ceilidh Trail School of Music in Inverness, Cape Breton, Boston College's Gaelic Roots Summer School in Boston, MA and The Valley of the Moon Scottish Fiddling School in San Francisco, CA. These opportunities allowed Doug to study with such renowned fiddlers such as Buddy MacMaster, John Campbell, Jerry Holland, Carl MacKenzie, Sandy MacIntyre, Seamus Connolly and Alasdair Fraser, to name a few.
Doug has performed at many concerts and festivals over the years, locally and throughout North America including The Lowell Folk Festival, Celtic Colours International Festival, The Washington D.C. Irish Festival and The New Hampshire Highland Games. He has performed live on Brian O'Donovan's Celtic Sojourn - WGBH Radio, as well as NECN's CoffeeHouse and several other local television and radio stations throughout Massachusetts.
Doug currently performs with an ensemble called Trì (pronounced tree, is translated to the number three from ancient Scots Gaelic). Trì released their debut album titled "Among Friends" in the fall of 2009 and have since performed at such venues and festivals such as Club Passim, Johnny D's, Berklee's Cafe 939, Blue, ICONS Music and Arts Festival, Boston Celtic Music Festival, The New World Festival in Braintree, VT and The Longs Peak Scottish Highland Festival in Estes Park, CO.
