Double Negative Records began in early 2004, when Disco Shawn attended a house party thrown by some of his girlfriend's friends from high school, all of whom had managed to relocate to the East Bay after growing up in San Diego. At the party Shawn saw the 2nd ever performance by Postcoitus, which at the time was a one man band consisting of little more than cheap synthy beats, strobe lights and a whole lot of fun. For some reason this performance gave him a mental kick in the ass and he decided to start a record label with Postcoitus as the first artist.
Over time, Double Negative Records has evolved into something resembling an actual record label. Although most our bands still love a good house party or warehouse show, they have also toured the country and made their mark outside the Bay Area. To date, DNR has five releases to its name and two more are planned for this November.
Double Negative Records is an independent record label highlighting the Bay Area music scene, especially the sounds of the Oakland underground.
