My husband, Leo, and I are professional wildlife photographers who recognize that sharing photos and video contribute greatly to conservation.

We are among the founding membership of the International League of Conservation Photographers(www.conservationphotography.net)

Historicly, wildlife management has been focused on meeting the needs or desires of hunters, with wildlife viewing being a secondary consideration. We are NOT anti-hunting, (Leo is a hunter) but we hope wildlife viewers will help managers recognize special viewing areas, such as the McNeil River Bear viewing area, and set management goals to maximize those viewing opportunities.

We support hunting as a management tool, but hope managers, and politicians lobbied by hunting groups, will acknowledge that hunting license and game tag fees are payments for taking a public resource and harvesting it for a single user's benefit. Those fees do not justify the current mindset of managers who give the highest priority of wildlife management to hunting.

We were leaders of the private, non-profit group Friends of McNeil River for 10 years, dedicated to protecting the world famous McNeil River brown bears. We were instrumental in establishing the 119,000-acre McNeil River Refuge. In 1995 we were featured on CBS News' "Eye on America" with John Blackstone twice when we led a drive to thwart a bear hunt in the refuge by encouraging people to apply for a permit and stay home if their names were drawn. It worked. Six of the eight permits were awarded to people who had applied for a hunting license to save the bears' lives. We later led the effort that closed the refuge to brown bear hunting.
