***MY POSITION ON THE LORDSHIP DEBACLE: So as nobody can twist my words, or presumptively accuse...although, there's certainly no shortage of that around these parts:
1. (GRACE) Works have NOTHING to do with salvation. Justification and Sanctification are 2 different things. We are Justified by the cross. Period. Faith is the vehicle by which believers receive that Justification...but it was the work of Christ on the cross that provided our Justification! Our faith didn't "provide" us with Justification, we are Justified through Christ. So, it is the object of our faith that Justifies us. We are saved by Grace.
2. (FAITH) Believers are the passive recipients of God-given faith, as it is only through His Grace that we receive it. So, faith, in and of itself, is NOT a work. While Faith in the believer leads to Sanctification, this has nothing to do with salvation...Sanctification is the result of salvation, it plays no causal role. That being said, we don't rest our assurance on our works, we look to the promise of God and His finished work on the cross. We are saved by Grace, through Faith.
3. (WORKS) While works do not contribute to salvation, the believer *will* have evidence of works in their life in varying degrees, and works, esp., fruits of the Spirit, play an important role in the life of the believer. While we may not place our assurance on our works, scripture does call us to examine ourselves, e.g., if our lives do not evidence any fruit. That being said, I believe there is a difference between saving faith and false conversion (see Mark 4:13-20). In addition, we will know OTHER believers by their fruits, as we are called to serve Him in BOTH Spirit AND Truth. We are saved by Grace, through Faith, to be God's workmanship.
This is very clearly laid out in Eph 2:8-10, like a simple algebraic formula. So, I hope this clears up my thoughts on the matter...just in case you were wondering ;
