Once upon a time, my father locked his keys in the trunk of his fancy Lincoln, requiring us to retrieve the spare keys at home...in my grandfather's decrepit van. I was displeased, imbued with an unfortunate sense of entitlement. Foam was bursting from the seats, acculumated dust and grime rendered the windows useless, and turning on the air conditioner only made the interior of the vehicle more stifling.

Eventually, my father grew tired of my complaining. "You know what," he said, "Your grandfather bought this van when it was brand new, because he worked for it and he could pay for it and he earned it. Now he's getting ready to sell it, and somebody is going to buy it for a lot less money than he paid for it. It'll probably be somebody who didn't pay attention in school, who didn't do their homework, and who's too lazy to find a real job. And you know what? It's going to be just fine. This van is going to be just fine. So what's the moral of the story?"

I thought for a moment, and replied: "Don't lock your keys in the car."

I was five.
