Shost. best p&f combo, given here the BEST performance you'll ever hear. Similar phen. interpretation on a Phillips CD. Jarrett's great too, but not in the same league for this stuff. Mind you, listen to Jarrett's Handel Suites: perfection unmatched, to date, at least.

I'm a Bach guy now; but seriously, I know this piece very well, and I hear some pretty phenomenal technique by any measure. It's not Richter, but in time I can see the same talent evolving.

There are SO many astonishing pianists out there these days, all competing for a bit of the limelight. It's hard. But this guy has one thing--no, make that 2 things--going for him that MOST out there don't: chops (Sviatoslav Richter-like), and interpretation/feeling/emotion/risk-taking.
So,...

The Hailun 218 is a piano phenomenon, but you would never know from this recording. Great playing, great piano, terrible recording equipment.

Bach - WTC 2 Prelude & Fugue in F# minor - Gould
This is one of the passion fugues and it borrows a motif from one of the most ingenious bach fugues, the c# minor fugue of book 1.

Richter (S) certainly accomplishes the impossible with so much in Book 1, especially the difficult fugues! But can't really compare the Richter BOS, recorded at a distance, to a close-up and personal Gould recording on, well, an entirely different instrument!!

This prelude can, I suppose, be played in many, many different ways! The polyphony is, or can be, completely transparent at lower tempi. But after years of playing it, myself, I think it benefits from a relatively strict and "quick" tempo! Still, great to hear an emotional reading!

So weird, isn't it? That one of the greatest, if not THE greatest, recording of the greatest solo cello music ever created should get soooo little attention here at YouTube.....
Gilels "owns" this concerto.... so many recordings by him of no. 4..... all of them leaps and bounds beyond anything else recorded since then....
Barenboim, even Richter--who never recorded or performed (guess why?)-- this concerto, have miles of emotional/intellectual territory to travel to ge...
