This is a myth- its not going to happen in 2012. The trip through the Galactic Plane occurs around every 60 million years. You can Google the info quite easily.
So many people make things up to fit their own personal neurosis.

This hull is still lying around unfinished, and unlikely to be. There are heaps of discussion on boatdesign net about how impractical this approach. Will hasn't been seen on his web site, or here for two years, so he must be laying low.
