Nature itself abounds with diversity, astounding beauty, symbiosis, mystery, parallel realities, harmony and humbling, awesome forces. Infinite shades of gray. The mind of the child and the simpleton seek a world of safely cut lines of absolutes, of clear-cut realms of black and white. Sheltering oneself from contact with diverse peoples and experiences and points of view only solidifies this. As one matures, multiple possibilities become apparent, consciousness expands to embrace paradox.
So, too, is the mosaic of humanity and its myriad languages and cultures - each a unique modality of common human experience, aspiration and community. We live, we grow up, we rejoice in birth, we share milestones, we celebrate, we learn. With each new way of expressing, we begin to experience the true essence of human expression as Walter Benjamin speaks of in "The Task of the Translator".
The bigot, the "anti-educational elite", the racial supremacist, the neo-con, void of understanding, flock to the small conclaves of intellectually lazy and spiritually barren dregs of society - those who seek meaning for their empty lies based, at best, on such superficial and arbitrary points of identity as skin color, or, at worst, destructive , un-original, obsolete and invalid ideologies, persist in the infantile notion of a black and white world - unable to open their minds and consciousness to what nature reveals to us each moment.
FEAR -MONGERING NEO-CONS! - The religious right (aka American Taliban) prop themselves up with self-righteous claims of Christian morality, yet bemoan even the slightest participation in a collective society that cares for its citizens. They throw tantrums like a five year old when asked to give up their wasteful toys, or pay a few dollars more so that all can have basic health care and access to fair education, COMPLETELY MISSING what real freedom is about. They use such hyperbole as "baby-killers" in reference to Democrats, yet block ANY legislation that would assist mothers and children, crying "communism!" (as if these cretins know the first thing about Marx and his writings).
What Would Jesus Do? He'd throw you out as he did the merchants in the Temple.
Science has repeatedly revealed that homosexuality is a natural phenomenon in the animal and human world. Like all of nature, sexuality abounds with shades of gray. Therefore, any law that denies full rights to ANYONE, including marriage, is unconstitutional, since as it stands, it violates separation of church and state.
Liberalism was once seen for the force it is until the neo-con began to repeat the lie over and over. Liberalism is the true force of progress, change and awakening. From the discoveries of science (blocked by the conservative voices of the church) to Martin Luther's challenge to the Catholic Church, to the ideas of individual freedom to change one's status in life by one's own efforts (virtually an unknown concept in Western history until the liberal philosophers of the Enlightenment), to the rights of women (even Ann Coulter has to thank a liberal for making it possible for her, as a single woman, to speak her mind freely), the forces of Liberalism are at hand. EVERY freedom and right you enjoy in the modern world is due to liberal forces.
There is nothing more simultaneously funny and sad than the neo-Nazi who decorates their page with quotes from Benjamin Franklin and George Orwell, a white supremacist's claim that Native Americans were "cannibalistic savages who deserved to be conquered", a Republican racist who claims that "only blacks were ever tribal", an uneducated neo-confederate that denies evolution and claims that Jesus wasn't Jewish, or a neo-con who insists that the Republican party as it is today is "the party of Lincoln". Ignorance is the root of hatred, of discord.
But ignorance can be cured. In this age of TV, high-speed internet, and jet travel, the choice is clear. Remember- the forces that benefit from your ignorance want to keep you that way. There is nothing more profitable to the corporate powers that control our society than to entice racial hostility among whites to keep them distracted, to lull them into submission with illusions of an evil world out to destroy "our way of life", to subdue them with fantasies of the American Dream.
Imagine what would be possible if poor whites, blacks, Jews, Hispanics and Asians worked together against the real evils in our society.
Celebrate diversity, welcome paradox, revel in nature and creativity, embrace love in ALL its forms, strive for atunement with the galactic forces of the universe (the atoms in our bodies were cooked in supernovas millions of years ago), see yourself in others. Travel the world with an open mind and heart (it will change you forever), learn from other cultures, and teach others about yours. Dispel ignorance about history, science, art and culture. Stand for equality and justice. Be ready for change. Be fearless.
