1971-72 season
In a dramatic end to the season, Derby County won the League title for the first time as Leeds blew their hopes of a Double by losing their final match, at Wolves, two days after beating Arsenal in the FA Cup final. Stoke won the League Cup, their first ever major trophy, and Spurs beat Wolves in an all-English UEFA Cup final.
1975-76 season
QPR came within a whisker of winning the League title but were pipped at the post by Liverpool, who also won the UEFA Cup. Second Division Southampton were surprise FA Cup winners, while Manchester City won the League Cup. West Ham reached the final of the Cup-Winners' Cup but lost out to Anderlecht.
1980-81 season
Aston Villa claimed their first title for 71 years, edging out an Ipswich side who ended a memorable season by beating AZ Alkmaar in the UEFA Cup final. Liverpool finished down the League pecking order but won their third European Cup and first ever League Cup, while Spurs beat Manchester City in a classic FA Cup final.
1984-85 season
A season remembered chiefly for trouble on the terraces, culminating in the tragic events at the Heysel Stadium prior to Liverpool's European Cup final defeat to Juventus. This overshadowed the tremendous achievements of Everton. who powered to the League title and European Cup-Winners' Cup, but were denied a hat-trick of trophies when ten-man Manchester United beat them in the FA Cup final. Norwich won the Milk Cup, though their season ended in relegation to Division Two.
1988-89 season
Tempered though it was by the cataclysmic effects of the disaster at Hillsborough in April, the climax to this season was nevertheless more remarkable than any before it. Arsenal snatched the title from Liverpool's grasp in the last seconds of the final match, just six days after the Merseysiders had beaten local rivals Everton in a thrilling FA Cup final. Luton's defence of the Littlewoods Cup ended in the final to Brian Clough's resurgent Nottingham Forest.
