This is what happened to Dan after the advertising executives had pocketed their pay cheques and gone back to London.
It's a true story.
This video is a response to the new campaign by Action for Children. Their advertisement portrays autism as a monster to be defeated, a monster with the nice well behaved boy trapped inside. An adolescent boy, Dan, narrates his story of how Action for Children helped him come to accept that his anger at bullies was wrong. He has been taught instead to blame his autism, to see how he had been a bad person.
Are Action for Children unconcerned with how bad autistic children will feel after seeing themselves portrayed in such a way?
This terrible ad will further reinforce the view many have of autism as a miserable thief of children and destroyer of families. Families with autistic members face enough difficulties, discrimination and stress from the lack of understanding of society. Action for Children has just gone and made their lives even harder.
Their website contains more information about Dan. A series of grim, sinister illustrations depicts his journey from a worried, confused teenager through his year of sadness and isolation at an Action for Children residential school, to his final acceptance of his culpability and desire to please his carers.
Action for Children say they are, "committed to helping the most vulnerable children and young people in the UK break through injustice, deprivation and inequality, so they can achieve their full potential."
With this campaign they have failed the people they seek to help.
If you object to their ad, please email: gary.day@actionforchildren.org.uk

EVERY JOURNEY IS UNIQUE is a documentary my daughter Jeni and I did 'starring' my grandchildren. Jake, 10 has Aspergers, Jaxson, 6 is autistic and just started a 21/2 hour a day program with a GREAT school specializing in developmental delays. I've researched and learned so much about sensory issues and OCD and many other things that can be found in individuals with autism.
EVERY JOURNEY focuses on their story, with brief appearances by JOJO, a claymated (and I use that term very loosely !) figure that helps the viewer understand how it feels to be an autistic in a very simple and engaging way.
We've entered it into a few small film festivals, including the SPROUT festival in NYC, which primarily deals with movies about and by individuals with developmental issues.
We'd LOVE for as many people to see it as possible, and are hoping that we get a chance for that to happen.
