Seeing as the average consumer now adays has vista home premium or 7 home premium, 1 I would upgrade to 7 ultimate. That's pretty much guarenteed to speed up your computer if your computer has the proper specs for it.
Otherwise, just use the programs windows comes with. 1.disk clean up, 2.defrag.
My operations and networking teacher would probably suggest using advanced system care. Idk how good it is, as I use dual boot with linux debian, and windows 7 ultimate atm.
Restarting your computer is also important. As you build up ram over time and restarting your pc clears out the ram.
