The difference between Maoism and Leninism is a basing in the peasants as opposed to the workers. Of course the workers counted too, but China was mostly farmers. Mao expanded Marxism-Leninism to include the new developments. Mao understood contradictions in Marxism and sought to solve them be analyzing mistakes made by the Soviets. To him the war isn't over at socialism. It ends at communism, you need to keep the culture further. but that's only a brief explanation.
