"Hole in the Wall" (the music) must be one of the loveliest country dance tunes in Playford....a favorite of mine in any case. And such a lovely rendition and well-danced.

Two favorites missed:

a) The dance in "Four Feathers," in which the characters create a back-to-back square for the newly affianced couple to dance it; it is later seen in a battle by a defending army who likewise stand back-to-back in a square--an eerie but apt juxtapostiion, and

b) The Mi...

The dance instructions will be in the dancing masters' manuals, like those by Feuillet, et al. This interpretation seems a bit too balletic to me; one might compare the New York Baroque Dance Ensemble's rendition for another stylistic interpretation.

A tiny quibble, the hand-hold on the forward walk seems high to me, is that in the dance description? Otherwise, lovely, quite well done.

So, I should remember to comment on what a hunk O'Dette is on the next recording of his I listen to? Gander sauce, and all that? C'mon, folks, even if the music is centuries old you can do something about your chauvinisms that are so 19th c.

Too bad the adults in the back couldn't sit still. The visual "noise" of their movement is distracting and reflects badly on their ability to concentrate on something outside themselves.

While the choreography is quite nicely done, it would be useful to have some sources for it, if it's in fact reconstructed (which I doubt, it looks a bit to 19th c. in form to me).

Actually, there's a reason the quadrille seen here resembles the Scottish county dance referred to below; they both developed around the same time and one may have in fact been based on the other. (Some claim the English and Scots country dances served in some way as the basis for the court dance...
