RAF and Royal Navy team up to rescue injured seaman

An RAF Kinloss-based Nimrod from 201 (Guernsey's Own) Squadron was called in to assist a Royal Navy Search and Rescue helicopter crew on Wednesday,...   more An RAF Kinloss-based Nimrod from 201 (Guernsey's Own) Squadron was called in to assist a Royal Navy Search and Rescue helicopter crew on Wednesday, 20 January 2010, by pinpointing the location of a Spanish fishing vessel carrying an injured fisherman.

The boat's position, some 200 nautical miles west of the Scilly Isles, was right at the limit of the Royal Navy Air Station Culdrose-based Sea King's operational range, and any time spent seeking the vessel may have forced the rescue mission to be aborted through lack of fuel. Fortunately, the 201 Sqn Nimrod was on hand to locate the fishing vessel ahead of the helicopter's arrival, saving valuable time and ensuring the successful rescue of the fisherman.
