Mostly self taught (a few friends have taught me informally over the years.)

I am a guitar player that happens to only have one hand. I am missing my hand from the long bone of the wrist downward. A few people have discretely asked about this so I figure I should give a little explanation. I am missing my right hand.

I learned to play guitar around 1978 (thanks Gary D). Back then I wore a prosthetic hook. I abandoned that due to it cumbersome nature, weight, bulk, cost and lack of any tactile feedback (try playing guitar with winter gloves on and you'll get a bit of an idea of what its like ;-)

Instead I use a custom designed Lexan and leather device that wraps around the end of my arm (Patent Pending.) The extremely lightweight of the Lexan and Leather picking device greatly expanded the range of things I learned to do over years playing the guitar.

I also play piano using my right wrist area as tho its one big finger. I use two keyboards. One that I play bass range notes with my right arm. The other I play with my left hand - chords and melody. Sometimes I do play the more traditional left hand - right hand form on a piano and play the simplified melody notes with my right arm, in lieu of a right hand. It works out ok. Fingers would be nice to have but you make due with what you have :-) Most peoples true limitations are their fears not their physical capabilities. I am a better guitar player than many and less accomplished than most. I just play and in the process I get better at doing stuff. I really never focus on learning a technique with my right arm. I might be better if IO did but I'm not that patient. I do run scales and stuff to practice picking but no more than 30 minutes a week.

There is almost always another way to do something, so keep trying till you find something that works.

People have said to "Boy, that must be hard to play guitar with one hand!" A bit like telling a fish "That must be hard to breath underwater!" Never did it any other way, so not sure how much harder it is. Probably but what ya gonna do? ;-)

I prefer not to focus on being a one handed guitar player (get a bit boring discussing the subject, except with other people with challenges playing music looking for encouragement and ideas, I'm always up for that - so if you are looking for help, encouragement, ideas, support, etc. whether you are a parent, kid or whatever - contact me.)

I'm just a guitar player, who only has one hand. Judge me on that. Otherwise, I'm one of the worlds best one handed guitar players! (a small group very likely and not a real goal for me.) I'd rather be a good guitar player, bigger group to be a member of, more of a challenge :-)
