Deborah Wai Kapohe, M.Mus, BA, LRSM

Worldwide, few professional opera- singers can claim so diverse a repertoire of talents as Deborah Wai Kapohe, M.Mus(Distinction), BA, LRSM.

Recognised as New Zealand's most promising soprano, Deborah is also highly regarded as a contemporary singer,singer/songwriter and guitarist .

Born in Southland, she has performed in operas, musicals, contemporary Maori music , arts festivals, proms, concerts, recitals ,self accompanied guitar and voice recitals and special events throughout New Zealand and Australia, as well as in the UK, China and South Africa.

Her traditional operatic roles include Pamina in The Magic Flute, Mimi in La Boheme, Rosalinde in Die Fledermaus,Sophie in Massenet's Werther, Adalgisa in Norma, Nannetta in Falstaff,Cherubino in The Marriage of Figaro, Leila inThe Pearl Fishers,Marguerite in Faust and most recently the role of Carmen. "There were no redeeming features about a creature like Carmen apart from the accolades that Deborah Wai Kapohe should take for portraying the role in such a fearful fashion" Opera-Opera,2006.

Her Premiere Opera performances include Outrageous Fortune by New Zealand composer Gillian Whitehead; Wide Sargasso Sea and Gauguin for Chamber Made in Australia; and Grandma's Shoes, a joint production between Opera Australia and Theatre of Image in Sydney, Jan 2000. Special events include singing for The Duke of Edinburgh World Fellows at St James Palace, Cathcart Spring proms at the Royal Albert Hall, with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra at the Sydney Olympic Arts Festival, National Anthems at Jade Stadium and for Royalty at Huka Lodge. 2005 included performing a staged version of Porgy and Bess "Jazz Style" with the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra, Coaching " Survival " techniques at the New Zealand Opera School in Wanganui, New Zealand and a season as Mimi in La Boheme with Wanganui Opera, Wanganui, New Zealand. Deborah opened the New Zealand Trade Awards in August, performing with Strike .

2006 began with Deborah performing with Russell Watson in Marlborough , a program of South American Music with the Christchurch Symphony
Orchestra , the Proms with the Southern Sinfonia and the title role of the opera Carmen , which is staged by Otago University using graduates from Otago University.

Deborah completed her Masters Degree in Vocal Performance coached by Professor Terrence Dennis and Isabel Cunningham at the University of Otago with Distinction in May 2006 .2006 will conclude with 2 performances at the Shanghai International Arts Festival in November.

Deborah was sponsor of both the Pacific and Christian Songwriting Competitions 2005 and 2006 which presented a total of $65,000 to songwriters who entered from around the globe. Deborah's songwriting has encompassed writing a commission for the Southern Sinfonia in Dunedin, a tour of New Zealand with Arts on Tour New Zealand of her own music and 3 CDs of her music.
