~Phenomenal Woman~
Dr. Maya Angelou
Pretty women wonder where my secret lies
I'm not cute or built to suit a model's fashion size
But when I start to tell them
They think I'm telling lies.
I say
It's in the reach of my arms
The span of my hips
The stride of my steps
The curl of my lips.
I'm a woman
Phenomenally
Phenomenal woman
That's me.
I walk into a room
Just as cool as you please
And to a man
The fellows stand or
Fall down on their knees
Then they swarm around me
A hive of honey bees.
I say
It's the fire in my eyes
And the flash of my teeth
The swing of my waist
And the joy in my feet.
I'm a woman
Phenomenally
Phenomenal woman
That's me.
Men themselves have wondered
What they see in me
They try so much
But they can't touch
My inner mystery.
When I try to show them
They say they still can't see.
I say
It's in the arch of my back
The sun of my smile
The ride of my breasts
The grace of my style.
I'm a woman
Phenomenally
Phenomenal woman
That's me.
Now you understand
Just why my head's not bowed
I don't shout or jump about
Or have to talk real loud
When you see me passing
It ought to make you proud.
I say
It's in the click of my heels
The bend of my hair
The palm of my hand
The need for my care.
'Cause I'm a woman
Phenomenally
Phenomenal woman
That's me.

A poem from Gretchen:
I walk down the street, followed by eyes
criticizing my size as if my thighs and belly
were somehow your burden...
my shame, somehow your prize.
as if my rolls and curves were somehow your fodder,
and harder I stare at you to see if you'll meet my eyes
and you will not.
You don't care if you know me, don't care if you hurt me
don't care if you stab me with your judgment
plunging daggers of hatred and despise into my side.
Sometimes I think you stare because you can't understand
why someone my size can hold their head up with pride
and put one foot in front of the other with confidence,
with courage in my gait,
how someone with blubber can be so bold, so brave, can be so
me.
it's because your daggers have made me resilient
brilliantly, stepping into the armor of my scars
daring to find excellence
despite your constant stares
that never meet my eyes
that look at you thinking that maybe you'll learn something
about what it means to survive
thinking that maybe you'll see the human behind the size...
as I walk down the street. still followed by eyes

"When I became convinced that the Universe is natural-that all the ghosts and gods are myths, there entered into my brain, into my soul, into every drop of my blood the sense, the feeling, the joy of freedom. For the first time I was free...free to think, to express my thoughts...free to live my life for myself and those I loved...free to investigate, to guess and dream and hope...free to reject all ignorant and cruel creeds...I stood erect and fearlessly, joyously, faced all worlds...."
