He's no cardiologist, but somehow he knows how to ease a person's so-called "heart problems"—figuratively. In this time when most relationships last only a week or two, and most people get hurt in the process of loving, Joe D' Mango, of the long-running successful on-air program LOVE NOTES, offers solace for the aching heart and bruised egos. Joe, whose on-air name was derived from the late Marilyn Monroe's ex-husband Joe DiMaggio, finds peace in knowing he is helping people out.
Joe D' Mango is actually a veteran not just in giving love advices but in the radio industry as well. Having worked for several radio stations before finally settling down in Wave, it is no wonder why he is acknowledged as one of the best deejays in the metro. Joe D' Mango was actually discovered in national television when RPN-9 launched "This Is It!" in 1988. It was an amateur deejay contest sponsored by Coca-Cola, and Rolickin' Roland, the then Joe D' Mango, bagged the first prize. After that event, Joe got his first real radio job as a DJ trainee at DWBL 1242 KHZ AM. But what catapulted this simple guy into fame and success was when DWTM 89.9 MAGIC FM got him as a DJ for the station despite the height of the February Revolution in 1986. At that time, radio talk shows were very out of the box, since it wasn't really that prevalent in the radio scene. DJs were only expected to spin records and play songs and nothing more than that. But Joe D' Mango thought otherwise by doing spiels on his own show. And he was receiving lots of song requests coupled with little messages about love problems. Joe got a kick out of listening to what those people have to say and offering advices, and it was in that way that LOVE NOTES was born.
In 1990, an international DJ contest was held at Yokohama, Japan sponsored by 84.7 FM YOKOHAMA, and out of the 762 entries from different countries vying for the grand prize, Joe D' Mango was one of the 14 contestants to make it to the finals. He won second place in that contest, further adding to his credibility as a seasoned DJ at the age of 21. Since then, Joe D' Mango has been unstoppable. He has hosted a talk show (RPN-9's Midnight Calls in 1992) and has already hosted a TV series when LOVE NOTES was formally launched into primetime TV (ABC-5). In 1994, he was already writing LOVE NOTES for the Manila Times, and later after that LOVE NOTES went big screen. Viva Entertainment launched LOVE NOTES as a full-length movie. LOVE NOTES became phenomenal because it was the first, and only, radio program to cross all elements of media: radio, print, television, film, book, music, phone, internet, and just lately, mobile services. LOVE NOTES has already been printed as news articles (Philippine Daily Inquirer, Libre), compilation forms, pocket novels, and has been integrated into compilation albums that garnered good sales and was even turned into a premium phone service (PLDT Love Notes Hotline). For the integrity he has incorporated in his name and career, Joe was finally appointed Station Manager of 89.9 MAGIC in 1997, then he got transferred to WAVE 89.1, and finally as an appointed Operations Consultant for JAM 88.3. All three stations were, and still are, top-raters in the radio industry.
Indeed, Joe D' Mango has come a long way from being a DJ trainee to one of the big-time FM Radio pioneers in the Philippines. His program, LOVE NOTES, is still active and very much alive both in radio and print. And Asian Journal is about to welcome Joe D' Mango and LOVE NOTES as partner in print, all for the benefit of Filipino readers here.
Asked why he and LOVE NOTES are strong and has a big following, Joe answers with confidence, "I practice what I preach."
