I am probably wrong, but the first thing that came into my mind was the festival of flagellation. It is a religious expression and a powerful one at that. I guess it takes place right around Christmas. These folks beat themselves badly with things like bladed chains. It's pretty dramatic.

You really oughta take a can of compressed air to your comp. It's pretty easy and it's a smart thing to do in general. I am a smoker too and when I opened my comp (sounded a lot like yours at the time) it looked like hell in there. Just pop her open, give it a couple toots and bam, good as new.
