You mentioned the champions room. You never need to buy it. It's one of the chests in Ted's village. If you backtrack to the house with the chest and to the bottom cliff before you go back through the portal, you will find one.

I just finished the game last night. Man, what a ride. Grandia is the game that most represents why I love video games and fantasy in general as a story telling medium: the adventure! This game captures and perpetuates it so well! It's gives off quite the rush at some of the better parts :)
