Great. getrealandsee now posts about Kwan on Butyrskaya's videos as well? Though I have to say that Butyrskaya at her best would have easily won Olympic gold in 2002. Her 1999 title was not a fluke.

She is so exotic. I don't think pictures do her justice - you have to watch the movies.

Even if there was politics that prevented this team from winning gold, their programs weren't good enough for 1st to begin with.

I thought they should have been 4th here. I agree with Scott's comment being ignorant. The Russian teams are diverse, as different as the three Chinese teams are from each other.

As wonderful as I&Z performed, they still had a touchdown on a jump. Keep in mind that the 4th and 6th place Russian teams performed two sets of triples, while I&Z did just one. And Petrova & Tikhonov skated completely cleanly. I think 5th was correct, as much as I would like them to place higher.

You could make a good case here that Sasha should have won the short, but Kwan skated well too.

@getrealandsee Nope, I'm not defending Kwan. For instance, I also didn't she deserved 1st in the SLC short program. But she won all her world titles pretty objectively, any figure skating expert will so.

I think Liashenko should've been the winner here. Julia's program was exciting, but it only was because of the Hungarian crowd and Julia's fistpump in the end despite only completing four triples. Julia was in Hungary and 'had' to win unless she blew up.

Her technical content was executed perfectly. Good quality skating skills, but her problem as always was her relation to the audience and involvement with the music. She could have been anywhere from 4th to 6th, but unfortunately her smaller reputation gave her the unfair end of the stick.

This performance was so gorgeous and light. I think she was placed correctly - despite her amazing spins and spirals, it was a relatively simple program in construction. Her skating skills were also weaker than Kwan's, and maybe Slutskaya's. But this is certainly a top-three program.

I've always thought of Irina's 3F as a bad landing, not so much as a turn-out actually. I thought Irina should have won in SLC, but close call.

Gifted in the short program? Anyone remotely understands judging won't see the 5.9s as a gift. The results were determined by the skate order, and nothing else. Both of them put amazing performances, but the latter skater almost always wins. The same happened between Lulu and Kwan in 1996.

@Karosanyo I looked back into the video, and she did indeed two-foot the second jump in the sequence (maybe a very slight two-foot on the first one, but that was pretty insignificant in my opinion). But for the record, she had one fall. Her deductions were -1.00, not -2.00.

I personally never saw what was great about their skating. They didn't deserve gold in my eyes - nothing remarkable or difficult.

Her program components marks were WAY too high.

Amy Chua pointed out numerous times that this is a memoir, not a how-to guide. Whether or not you agree with what she says, the purpose of the book is not to serve as a parenting manual, which many of you are treating it as.

This is exactly the reason why Sarah shouldn't have gotten gold. This performance was weaker than those of Butyrskaya, Sebestyen, and Suguri. She had flutzes, cheats, and didn't close the circle of her spiral sequence - too many small deductions.

I don't see why people say she was screwed. Fumie landed 5 triples, Sasha landed 6. I personally felt 5th place was appropriate. This was a terrific program, but it's true that some of the steps were on the easy side. Nevertheless, I'd have them a bit higher - Grushina/Goncharov 9th, L/T 10th, and the Russians 11th.

This was a toss-up to me. S&P weren't THAT far behind with the content of their program that a slipup by Elena & Anton would have kept them first. It could have gone either way.
