My mother was a Katherine Dunham dancer (& also an artist) and my dad was a reticent, hard working man. Mom's people were Caribbean and Dad's people were of Latino descent. My mother listened to a lot of Broadway soundtracks (like South Pacific), and vocalists such as Carmen McRae, Esther Phillips, Sarah Vaughn, Billy Eckstine, etc. Dad liked lots of Latin jazz and had the nerve to love Bob Dylan LOL! At least he was hard core when it came to his 8-track tapes, in is collection was everything from some Barry White to Ray Charles! I was a Core member of Paradise Garage (RIP Larry Levan) and original Shelter member (DJ Timmy Regisford still doing it). I also patronized the Loft, Melons, Cuckoos Nest, Buttermilk Bottom (the great Nicky Siano), Better Days (RIP Tee Scott master turntablist), Catacombs (Philly), Clubhouse (DC), Zanzibar, Choice, & Murphy's Bar in New Jersey) etc. Prior to dance music I grew up in the Bronx listening to Kool Herc, Bambatta, Disco King Mario, Kool DJ Dee, to name a few and went to park parties in the Valley (Baychester, BX) also. In the 70's and the 80's music on the radio was magical! So called top 40 music was nothing short of creative- R&B, rock, Latin, jazz and everything under the sun! That's why I love music & people but abhor snob bullshit (because how can you be a snob and here it is that I lived it and breathed it)? I collect music and still buy vinyl as well as digital. I am still active in the dance scene as a patron (on the East coast) as well as the talent (that's right I spin dammit LOL)! I keep my ears and eyes open to the new as well as the old but I also will call you out if your posing or giving the wrong information about a piece of music. I am very passionate about music particularly dance and jazz so if you are uploading music AND you have a great collection AND call everything a "garage classic" but really don't know the origins or even a little history on who or how it was made it you might as well block me now (like seriousgroove did)... LMAO!!!!! Love, peace and great music to you all! Added Aug. 2011-Btw I have been listening REALLY intently (with an especially discerning ear) of late to many of the extraordinarily talented female vocalists that were recording around the same time as Whitney Houston was. The talent was astonishing to say the least... Angela Bofill, Stephanie Mills, Phyllis Hyman and Miki Howard (my personal favorite of all time along with Minnie Riperton-RIP) to name just a few. And I think about what if there wasn't an MTV... what say you? What do you think?! Mmmmm?!
