Jonas Kaufmann - Salut, demeure chaste et pure (Met 2011)
Jonas Kaufmann as Faust in Gounod's Faust
Conducted by Yannick Nezet-Seguin
Met 2011
Again Kaufmann lavishes his profound artistry on what was a "warhorse" and found muances that seem to escape most tenors. This married to his supeerb Frrench make him a treasure that we are very lucky to have singing currently..

Panis Anglicus I suppose almost bordeers on kitsch, but Dame Elizabeth lavishes all her formidable artistry and vocal talent on it as if it were a great song by Wolf or Strauss thereby making it remarkable in spite of far too many performances that should hever have seen the light of day.

Sena Jurinac sings "Dich teure Halle" from Wagner's Tannhauser
A peerless artist I am so glad that I at least saw her once in Vienna, in Rosenkavaliser, the Marschallin--not Oktavian. she was glorious.

Teyte has been one of my favorite singers going back to the late 40's when she sang quite frequently on the Bell Telehone Hour--pre TV.. Extraoirdinary technique that kept the voice steady and even. I suppose that one either likes it or not--I could never comprehend anyone who can sucumb to her a...

I can only presume that this artist was not interested in an intermational career; if this sample of her artistry is accurate she certainly had the goods. Didn't she recently die?

Ombra di nube- Jonas Kaufmann
Refice: Ombra di nube, concert Jonas Kaufmann in Essen on October 10, 2011
If any thing this is more nuanced than his recording of this song (included in the CD of verismo arias.)His In fernam land from the live stage performance is even more moving than this recording. What a great artist and singer.

Giuseppe Filianoti - "Kein andres, das mir so im Herzen loht" Strauss: Capriccio
Giuseppe Filianoti - "Kein andres, das mir so im Herzen loht" Strauss: Capriccio
This is an extraordinary clip. An Italian tenor singing in German in an opera which is made up more of arioso and lacking the kind of cantilena--present excerpt excepted--Does anyone know where this performance took place and who else was in the cast?

Karita Mattila & Thomas Hampson in Arabella: "Das war sehr gut, Mandryka" 6
Richard Strauss' Arabella from Théâtre du Châtelet (2002) with Karita Mattila, Thomas Hampson, Barbara Bonney et al. Christoph von Dohnányi conduct...
This performance should be made commercially available; Mattila was at her best vocally and this role is made for her; please no more attempts at Puccini; Even though Hampson is a lyric baritone he knows the music should go;plus he is so comfortable on stage--as is Mattila.

One of my favorite moments in the Ring. Dalayman is superb. I assume this was a ;product of Swedish Opera given the subtitles and the logo iin the upper right hand corner. While provincial German performances of the Ring get released, a performance of distinction is bypassed. The world is upside ...

Katarina Dalayman - Ein Schones war
Ariadne auf Naxos
with Natalie Dessay
Ariadne seems to bring out the goofy when it come to "concepts" but when you have an Ariadne with the voice of Dalayman who cares! It's hard to believe that she started out as a mezzo.

This is one of the late Muzio recordings that I seemed to have missed--my loss. It is glorious to hear an Italian singer of her quality sing this music even if trills and other assorted bel canto niceties were not part of her arsenal. The voice is glorious. A pity that she did not sing Leonora i...

Ewa Podles sings Erda's Warning
The greatest Erda of all times
No argument about Ludwig--she was extraordinarily versatile when you look at the list of roles she sang., from Rosiina to Fidelio and Barak's wife; I suspect she enjoyed her foray into the soprano rep. Bumbry, of course, decided she wanted to be a soprano. Norman seemed to flirt with a variety, ...

Thanks for the information; Seattle is indeed lucky to have an Erda of this quality when all the recordings have to make do with a mezzo--usually very lightweight.
