Even though the songwriting credit is attributed to Jesse Thomas on this recording, it is common acceptance that Blind Lemon Jefferson composed it. Jefferson recorded it in 1926.
Jesse Thomas was born in Logansport, LA. on February 11, 1911. He made his debut recordings playing guitar behind Bessie Tucker in 1929 sessions held in Dallas, TX. for Victor. At the same time in the same sessions, he was also featured as a solo artist giving him records issued under the name of Jesse "Babyface" Thomas. Thomas didn't go back into a studio for almost two decades, but by that time he had accepted the changing times in blues and had reinvented himself as a jump blues electric guitar player, something similarly akin to the career of T-Bone Walker. Thomas rejumped his career making "jump-blues" recordings in Los Angeles and Houston, TX. between 1948 and 1956 for labels such as Miltone, Freedom, Modern, Swingtime, Specialty, Elko, and Recorded In Hollywood. He also made recordings in 1957 in Shreveport for RIH under the name of "Mule Thomas". In 1960 & 1965 he recorded two 45 RPM's for the local Red River label, his two waxings from '65 had him billed as "Jerry Ann & Las Vegas Cats"! Thomas had an even longer break from the recording studio when he finally recorded a CD for Black Top in 1995 "Lookin' For That Woman", that was released a year after his death. Jesse Thomas passed away in Shreveport on August 15, 1995. His career as a bluesman spanned six decades. He was the brother of Willard "Ramblin'" Thomas and the uncle of Lafayette Thomas.
