Sailing on Fathers' Day davedupplaw - 14 views - 1 week ago
Went out for a sail on Fathers' Day - just me and Dad.

Started off pretty quiet - no wind at one point. Got a few mph of wind as we wallowed our way out to sit in the races off Old Harry Rocks. Then, over about 1 minute, the wind went from about 4mph to about 18mph, which is getting on for the maximum for Coronella without reefing.

We sailed directly away from shore for a bit and began to head back. We realised we were heading back a bit soon, so turned about and headed off towards Weymouth. We were smashing through the waves caused by the wind-against-tide.

We turned back again and the wind was behind us, then it went dead and it turned until we were close hauled (again - we always seem to be with this boat).

I didn't video it because it was a bit hectic, but we tacked down the main channel towards Poole Harbour Entrance, until we necessarily had to motor back to the mooring.

The photos were taken by Caroline, my wife, who was having a coffee at the Haven Hotel with her Mum.

Jubilee Rag davedupplaw - 26 views - 1 week ago
The Jubilee Rag played (pretty badly) on my new Yamaha CP33. Learnt by ear from an old LP of Geoff Love's Ragtime Band. Sorry about all the bum notes; as soon as I start recording I make lots of mistakes. This is set to Grand Piano 2 (a bright piano) with the touch setting set to soft (which means you don't have to press hard to get hard notes).

2009 06 07 - Sailing in Poole davedupplaw - 34 views - 3 weeks ago
Another trip out in Coronella, my Dad's Cobra 750 26' yacht.

A bit more interesting this one. On the first tack the sheet got snagged. Then shortly afterwards we were sailing along and, as the cyclonic weather warning warned, the wind suddenly changed direction. The genoa got back-winded and pushed the bow around and off we went in a different direction to the flurry of arms and ropes.

Once back on track, it started raining!

The Hurling Boys and The Rochdale Coconut Dance davedupplaw - 98 views - 1 month ago
A lovely friend gave me their old accordion last week, so during my lunch hour today (which turned into quite a long lunch hour) I thought I'd put together a little set of English folk tunes.

The first is a jig called The Hurling Boys (Jockey to the Fair) and the second is the Rochdale Coconut Dance, so called because the musicians clippity-clop with some coconuts. However, I don't have any coconuts so I used the tambourine (which looks slightly out of sync in the video.. awww)

The timing's off in a few places and a few bum notes in the accordion - I definitely need more practice! - but I had limited time so this is what you get.

Sailing in Poole Bay davedupplaw - 33 views - 1 month ago
Our first sail of 2009, on May 23rd. Unfortunately the lack of wind meant we had to motor more than we might have liked. We ended up anchored in Studland bay waiting for some wind. (BTW, we didn't anchor where the sea-horses are in Studland bay - that was my little dig at the people who had!)

Cliffs of Moher (Jig) and Five Leaf Clover (Reel) davedupplaw - 123 views - 1 month ago
Be sure to watch in HQ because the sound's terrible on normal quality.

Couple of tunes on the fiddle to show where I'm at after playing for just under 18 months. The jig's in A dorian and the reel in A minor. The first is a jig called the Cliffs of Moher and the second is a reel I know as The Five Leaf Clover.

I first recorded the fiddle the dubbed over the guitar. The guitar is tuned drop-d (DADGBE) and capo'd at the 7th fret.

The Road to Lisdoonvarna and Two Little Boats Went Out to Sea davedupplaw - 364 views - 3 months ago
A couple of slides for you. The Road to Lisdoonvarna is a very famous traditional irish slide (or possibly a single jig - I'm still a bit confused about the difference) in E dorian. The Three Little Boats Went Out to Sea is a Manx tune (from the Isle of Man) that I got from Edward Huw Jones' book The Celtic Fiddler. It's in B minor.

Do make sure you press that HQ button otherwise the sound quality is pretty rough.

I learnt this Scottish song after seeing the fantastic Breabach ( http://www.breabach.com/ ) playing it at their local concert. It was written by Glaswegian Matt McGinn.

I'm not much of a singer, but it's a beautiful song and I wanted to record it. I would normally play it in E, which is more my range, but I had trouble doing the violin counter melody in E, so I recorded it in G, which is a bit more of a stretch for my untrained voice. I recommend you go and get Breabach's album The Big Spree to hear a fantastic version, voiced by the superb Ewan Robertson.

The guitar's tuned in DADGAD with a capo at the 5th fret.

Shi Beg Shi Mhor, DADGAD davedupplaw - 272 views - 4 months ago
I've been trying to learn some DADGAD guitar in the last few months. Haven't really got the hang of it yet, but here's an aide-mémoire to remind me how bad I was a few months in, with a quick fly through O'Carolan's Shi Beg Shi Mhor - late at night with the camera focussed on the curtain :P
