Darrell Calvillo is an open class solo competitor, band leader, musical arranger, studio musician, instructor, band clinician, and proprietor of DC Music with over a decade of professional experience in the music industry.
As a performer, Darrell is a member of Celtic/World band Silent Planet, the Los Angeles Scottish (LA Scots)Pipe Band, and also performs with various bands or a soloist at various public and private events around North America. In the entertainment industry, Darrell has spent countless hours in the studio and recently has been featured by Lee Whittaker, KC and the Wright Combination, and Robbie Bray. Darrell has also been in television filmings for E! Bridezillas, TLC, and CSI-NY.
Darrell began his obsession with making music at age nine when he began his studies on violin. Aside from the school music programs he performed with the Citrus College Summer Youth Orchestra and Claremont Youth Orchestra. At age 13, Darrell began to learn he bagpipes and joined the Glendora High School Pipe Band. His first formal instruction in piping from Jeffrey Henderson and Colin Armstrong. Darrell received formal training music theory and performance at Citrus College and the University of La Verne. At Citrus College began to began to learn baritone saxophone and explored different styles of music. He performed in various school groups, including the Sierra Wind Symphony, big band, and Latin (salsa and cumbia) ensemble. Studies at the University of La Verne reverted to Classical studies. These musical foundations in combination with tutelage of master pipers Murray Henderson, Ian Whitelaw, and Seumas Coyne have gifted Darrell with extensive experience in western classical music with specialization in the Celtic genre.
In the realm of competition pipe bands, Darrell is currently a member of the the grade 1 Los Angeles Scottish (LA Scots) Pipe Band, the premiere pipe band in the United States. In the recent past was a member of the grade 2 James J. Coyne Memorial Pipe Band serving as pipe sergeant and a principal instructor for the James J. Coyne Memorial School of Piping and Drumming from 2006-2011.
As an instructor, Darrell has instructed and mentored numerous competition bands, performance bands, and scores of individual students over a decade of instructional experience.
