Chopin op. 10/1: too fast to play?

I think the larger point of the video has to do with detaching Chopin from the cult of 'velocity virtuosity". Taking the tempo down a bit, even a good bit, renders the music more intelligible, and still exciting.

A very informative recorded document! I have to wonder, though, if the mechanism was able to capture Schmitz's use of the pedal. It seems quite dry for Debussy. Other than that, it's quite interesting to hear the performance of someone so close to Debussy. A very nice instrument, too.

I think that most would agree that while baroque music utilizes dynamics, it doesn't utilize them in a style reminiscent of the romantic era. This is due to the fact that the harpsichord has limited capability in this area. One crescendos by changing the registration or by overlap...

Pianist, organist and vocalist. I'm deeply committed to music of the 20th and 21st centuries, as well as the music of J S Bach, who is for me the source and focal point of all western music.Received my Master's degree at TCU, where I studied with Lili Kraus, focusing on the music of Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert.
Currently pursuing a PhD in the social sciences, while serving as Organist and assisting choir director in eastern Washington state.
This is one of the very few performances that I have heard of this piece that preserves the basic pulse of the various movements, and keeps the ornamental passage work from overwhelming the supporting musical structure. This piece is a bear to play, but I really like your performance.
