Pamela J. Cohen began dancing at an early age due to the encouragement of her first grade teacher. Her parents enrolled her with Mara Lysova, a longtime Ventura County ballet instructor and she danced and performed with Ballet Academie and Ballet Mime for 10 years. She moved to the Los Angeles area to continue training and there danced at several schools and companies including Ballet West, Michael Panieff, Eugene Loring, Bella Lewitsky and was a soloist with Sahakian and Co. Returning to Ventura County in the mid 1970s Pamela completed her education, obtaining a Bachelors degree in Liberal Arts with emphasis on Dance and a Masters degree in Physical Education. She has earned two lifetime teaching credentials from The California State Communitiy Colleges, in both Dance and Physical Education. Pamela has been teaching children and adults in Ventura County for over 32 years. Curriculum includes Modern and Jazz dance and body conditioning at Oxnard College, ballet, tap, jazz/hip hop, parent and child dance and movement, tumbling and dance theater performance through the cities Cultural Arts programs in Ventura, Oxnard, Port Hueneme and Pleasant Valley Recreation and Parks in Camarillo as well as specialty classes through Artists in the Classroom and Childrens Celebration of the Arts programs in the county public and private schools. Over the years Pamela has received numerous awards including The Wallace Stevens Award for excellence in teaching 1984-85, overall excellence awards from the cities of Ventura and Port Hueneme in 1992, Celebration of the Arts award from the city of Oxnard in 1992, and an outstanding service award for Slippers N Masks Youth Dance Theatre in Ventura in 2000. Pamela Cohen is dedicated to sharing her knowledge, skills and love of the arts with the children and adults of Ventura County. With the nurturing, non-competitive nature of her classes she has touched the lives of thousands. Her students have developed socially, physically and intellectually. Many have kept dance a part of their lives well into adulthood and all have an appreciation for the arts that will last a lifetime.
