About Me:

It's been a wonderful feeling to preside over such great events that have brought DO40 lots of press -- and new members. Our website is humming along, chock-full of photos and articles on our panel/performances and social events, our hard-copy newsletter continues to keep our older members without computers in touch with their former peers and friends, Actor's Equity Newsletter, American Theater Magazine and Backstage have all written wonderfully favorable articles about us, and we received our first grant from Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. And the video hits on this youtube channel are skyrocketing (over 250,000!). Now MILLIONS, not just our small membership base and fans can get a sense of the histories shared by our members at these events. We've compiled our panel clips into Playlists, so you can see all of the associated videos in one place! Just click Playlists and find the panel you want to watch, and there you go!
We count on our members to provide us with the means to produce, present and catalog these programs. We need both administration and production help, especially members who are computer savvy. So, if you'd like to offer your assistance, give us a call at 212-330-7016 or e-mail us at dancersover40@aol.com. We can't do it without you!
Your membership dollars allow our newsletter, website and events to continue. We donate to the Actors Fund Dancers' Initiative, founded by Bebe Neuwirth, and to Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. Our grant from Broadway Cares ensures that we can continue to bring our history, our legacy, and our lives to you all, and continue to educate and support those dancers about to begin their journey.
We're a small, wiry bunch, dedicated to helping the mature dancer in any way we can. Please visit our website at www.dancersover40.org, read through the articles and look for friends in the photos -- and become a member -- or friend of DO40 now! -- all you need do is hit that Paypal button, and you're on your way! If you prefer to download the membership application and send via snail mail, that's OK, too!

John Sefakis, President, and the Board of Directors of DO40
Hometown:
New York City
Country:
United States
Occupation:
dancers
Companies:
Broadway, Ballet, Modern
Interests:
ALL types of dance -- Broadway, Ballet and Modern, but especially the Theater Dance typified during the Golden Age of the Broadway Musical, 1940 - 1980.
Movies:
Our favorites -- are our dance directors and choreographers, whom we are saluting, along with the dancers who performed in the various shows these geniuses created. Therefore we presented panels on Bob Fosse (2), Gower Champion, and Jack Cole and at our 2008 Holiday party, the Ladies of the RCMH Corps de Ballet. Michael Kidd was honored in April 2009, with appearances by Shelah Hackett Kidd, Jane Powell, Carol Lawrence and Grover Dale. Our Spring Fling on June 7th featured the ballroom community -- and our DO40 members from the Michael Bennett musical BALLROOM!. Peter Gennaro launched our 2009 - 2010 season in October, with Carol Lawrence, Chita Rivera, Harvey Evans and a plethora of Peter Gennaro Dancers -- and dancing! Our first ever DO40 LEGACY AWARDS, in 2009, was our very first event where we had to have a cancellation line! The doors were bursting! The very deserving ladies of DO40 were -- Nicole Barth, Margery Beddow, Marge Champion, Gemze de Lappe and Billie Mahoney. The Playlist is up! 2010 events were all HITS! Our first ever dance concert for Broadway Cares, called DO40 CARES, at the Baryshnikov Center for the Arts was SOLD OUT. We haven't had such a diversity of talent, or such a great meeting of mature talent since 1999! All performances are here in a Playlist for your enjoyment! Our tribute to Michael Bennett at St. Luke's Theater in New York City was a LOVE fest for Michael, and featured Bob Avian, Kelly Bishop, Baayork Lee, Larry Fuller, Margo Sappington, Harvey Evans and a bevvy of DO40 Broadway gypsies from ALL of Michael's productions, not just A CHORUS LINE. Our Gwen Verdon event was sold out, with Nicole Fosse and her sons in the audience. Our Agnes de Mille panel included greats from the 1940s!!! Our 2010 Legacy Awards honored the DO40 men - Harvey Evans, Fred Curt, Richard Korthaze, Ken Urmston and Stuart Hodes. 2011 - 2012 is on the way to breaking all records. Our West Side Story event was so popular, folks in LA want us to come there and do it! Our 2011 Legacy Awards feature the teachers of DO40, Phil Black, Luigi, Bella Malinka, Frank Pietri and Joe Tremaine. Our 2012 Dance Concert will be held at the Ailey Citigroup Theater, Joan Weill Dance Center on March 12. And May brings an exciting panel on TAP! with Mercedes Ellington!
Music:
Youtube gives dancersover40 a chance to "show our stuff" with clips from our previous panels and performances. The organization has been in existence for the last 15 years, and includes members of the theatrical, ballet and modern dance world.

I was so sorry to hear of the passing of Marge Beddow- I have enjoyed hearing her stories of Bob Fosse in your videos, and I am trying to get her book. Many condolences to her family and to her friends.
