Excellent version. BUT this was recorded in 1969, Artie led the band

but that's Walter Levinsky playing the clarinet, Artie had not played in

something like 14 years. This was the Capitol LP "Artie Shaw re-creates

His Great 1938 band" (If I have that title right.)

Delightful. Are the spacious surroundings present in the

original recording? This sounds as though recorded in a

large hall. Abbey Road perhaps? (Weber moved to Britain

around 1934, I believe.)

This is very well done. Technically excellent, Good acting, and the music,

was instrumentally pleasing and used with good taste. My only quibble

is with the amateurish quality of the singing voice that closed out the film

--why a vocal here? It seemed unnecessary and a concession to

pop mu...

I saw this show when first broadcast. Welk decided to do one show consisting

of current pop hits. They weren't all in this style, either. On a later show

Welk quoted one fan letter as saying "mashed potatoes and champagne

don't mix" they resumed the format with a mix of various styles, the ...

This version of Cuckoo Waltz appears to be in a fake stereo sound. Not bad

results, though.

Ken recorded for the Rondo label around 1947 or so. "You Can't Be True

Dear" was supposedly a million seller. Ken joined Columbia (US)

around 1950.

This appears to be in some form of fake stereo. Good performance

'nevertheless.

@dbethke1959 good point ! But most of us musicians recognize that Andre played 2 numbers

from the Miller book that did not require the clarinet lead sound of things like "Moonlight Serenade"

the 2 numbers in a medley here, had a lot of unison passages. Even so, the results were

creditable fo...

Love this recording, first heard it when I was 15, I'm 67 now. But it evidentl;y

is considered a terrible crime to add just a little room sound to the signal, this

really is just a little too dry acoustically, and in this regard the James discs

recorded in Liederkranz hall in New York sound bett...

@zac613 Me too. Most music now IS crap. But you can find good performers

but it's a lot harder.

@555agray I always thought your dad was under-rated. Question, where now is the library to

the Jerry Gray orchestra located? A few numbers were published, such as "Crew Cut" (one of my favorites). I have been a bandleader myself, currently inactive (darn it!).

Excellent musicianship !! Joshua, don't ever stop. You're

too good.

Pretty good, but I recall the "Whipped Cream" album had a tad

more imagination and variety. This seems to pander more to

current fads and trends of the time, instead of being unique.

@maynardcat Right! but I understand these aluminum discs have a different SHAPE groove

and although your needle pressure seems harmless, you don't say if your stylus matches the

shape of the groove, maybe more volume will be had with the exact shape.

What's interesting about this performance, besides the nice harmonies,

is the fact that almost inevitably British recordings have a superior piano

sound, and the balance between voices and accompaniment is

perfect. Modern engineers would do better to listen to this aspect

of sound. Please keep ...

@affortunatus I like your comment. Why can't more young people realize that

a different version of a song is not necessarily a negative thing? Why should only one

version be etched in cement? If only one version is acceptable to them maybe the

This version is even better than Guy Mitchell's

a Jerry Gray side which has not appeared on LP or CD. Nice

performance from singer Tommy Traynor, who I had not heard

before. Anyone know what became of him?

if the Ragtime set made it to CD) so yours must have different contents,
