This excerpt always sends shivers down my spine. As Leonard Berstein said, "we are not likely to see her equal any time soon" (my paraphrase). Also, let's not forget the baritone, I believe it was Gino Becchi, who does a fabulous performance & really holds his own with Callas.

Very nice playing & lovely instrument sound.

Fascinating rendition, in spite of the conductor's inability to follow. Many conductor's simply didn't "get" Callas' interpretive genius, it seems. Her approach to tempo & her rubato make perfect sense to me, but not all conductors were willing, or able, to follow.

This is one of my favorite recordings of Mdme. Callas, late though it may be. Few singers "get" Rossini's music the way she does, as well as the Bell Canto repertoire in general. For many singers, it's just a lot of fast notes.

@AliciaDupres I like your comment. I find myself fascinated by many of Callas' late recordings in here "worse" voice -- her musical & dramatic genius still shine through.

One thing I love about this performance is her entrance & acknowledgement of the audience (just before this aria). The way she takes a moment to smile to the boxes both to stage left & stage right was so charming: even such a small detail before the music itself shows her genius for stagecraft ...

This recording always brings tears to my eyes. Callas was the greatest of them all.

Callas stood for something. She meant something to so many people who treasure all that is the greatest that mankind can create. I dare not try to define too specifically what that "something" is, but those to whom Callas' music speaks to, I believe, know what I mean.
