They are used to improve power quality and reduce line losses by compensating for the inductance of the line, loads, and big iron (transformers). Mostly they're put in substations but can also be pole mounted.

You are absolutely right. When we design a catalytic converter we balance the active ingredients (platinum, palladium, and rhodium) along with washcoat and substrate (metallic or ceramic), cell density. It is matched to the car, the emission test, and the engine. Then the ECM is calibrated around...

How do you get compressed air? With an air compressor that runs HOT. Heat is the bullshit detector of efficiency claims. Overall efficiency of this setup oughtta be about 6 or 8% when you do a well-to-wheels calculation.

The solution is a bigger turbo or different compressor wheel or housing. You need to match the compressor curve so when you take your engine displacement and work out mass flow, you want to run up the most efficient part of the compressor map. It can be tricky to match it perfectly. You want to b...

The explosion at the end sounding just like a fuse blowing. If it's an expulsion-type fuse, probably something like a Cutler-Hammer RDB, that's kind of what they sound like.

The ECM isn't dumb, either. It will be set up to detect a no-filter situation (or an EGR system removed or disabled) and derate or even stop. Perhaps the exhaust pipe should discharge right under the steering wheel, then you'd leave filters in where they belong.

I remember landing there. The shear right when you come over the cliff can be impressive. Is that why it seems like a fast landing? I think we dropped 20-30 feet. If none of the passengers hurl when landing at Telluride, that's better than a great landing.
