American Classical Symphonic Contemporary Music.....
for those interested...
about the 7 autobiographical sections offered:
1) Youth - the featured photo is my wife Marcia; i was 26 when i snapped this picture, on my honeymoon, at the beach, in 1975. I did not interrupt this photo with intermittent titles as i did in my previous 'graphic novels' pieces.
2) McLuhan's Cloths - a subconscious, perhaps, reference to Marshall McLuhan's book "Understanding Media" and the impact the chapter entitled 'clothes' had of my thinking during those years. I had given up painting upon entering graduate school in 1973 - and opted for what was considered then to be 'performance art' or roughly 'concept art'. I wore white tie and tails every day for a little more than two years ... as a kind of 'art uniform' - attempting to go through life 'formal'. This was en route to an MFA degree at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh.
3) Caged - refers to John Cage the artist / composer. In "The Medium is the Message" by Marshall McLuhan and Quintin Fiore there is a page devoted to Cage who says, (i am paraphrasing a bit) 'art takes place all the time - its the job of the artist to convince people that this is the case.' Hence i dressed formally for 'live theatre'. Later in my life i was introduced to Mr Cage. I told him that he had influenced my life, i still thought what he said was true, and that i was still trying to better at it. He was seated but upon hearing me say these things; he rose, clasped my hand and smiled warmly. I will never forget that moment.
4) Ready to Wear - refers to retail slang for clothes. I had found employment at May Company Department Stores (now defunct - but a leading national company in the 70's). Also, I would soon discover St. Francis of Assisi who is the Patron Saint of Retailors (his father, Pietro, was a wealthy cloth merchant). McLuhan's 'Cloths' seemed right for a title - as did 'Caged' - because there is liability, as well as euphoria, when one confronts the status quo, the 'establishment' as hippies were want to call established authority in the 60's.
5) Black Elk - refers to the great spiritual American Indian plainsman, of whom there is a well known biography. I secretly nicnamed my mentor and dear friend at Carnegie Mellon, Bruce Breland, "Black Elk". There was a subsequent time when certain members of Breland's DAX group (digital art exchange) took on alter ego - Indian names. I was Howling Weasel - there was Silly Rabbit, Jeffrey Horse Owl etc. ha ha. My choice of bell sounds was intentional - as "clang association" or relationship, right hemisphere brain orientation, was and remains a decidedly important factor in the friendship i still share with Professor Breland.
6) Nodes - refers to a term we ascribed to pre-internet locations that carried on telecommunication dialogues before email. DAX collaborations included friends in Vancouver, London, Paris, Vienna, Sydney, Perth, Sardinia and more. We 'expressed' ourselves in 1986 in the Venice Biennale. In the 1970's Professor Breland was engaged in 'mail art' through the postal system. The relationship between art and communication was merging then and i was priviledged to be engaged in it. I have upoaded a few samples of my involvement here on this channel... Bruce Breland has roots in Mississippi - i talk in a kind of mock 'old boy' way when offering these stories. I don't really know why.... perhaps because i prefer mythology to reality.

7) Labyrinth - refers to a culminating collaborative show that i co-auhtored with Matt Wrbican... but moreover this finale section attempts to be a sound description of the upheavals that have transpired as the mechanical world morphed into the electronic environments which subsume us today - and through which i am offering these reminiscing thoughts to you in word and also am empowered to do by 'music'.
ps
i find myself to be an algorithmic failture - as i have no idea about how to 'tag' the things i try to do on Youtube...
Thanks for reading this far!
