I saw the B and W version of this film ( with Michael Redgrave ) when I was in High School Cert. at R.C.P.L, Port-Louis, Mauritius in 1954 . I still think it is one of the best films I have ever seen. It is about what makes a man a man. It is about culture and civilization. It is about value...

I am younger than you... 75 years old. Streams of memories come back as I listen to this piece. My mother used to sing it and so did the older generation. She sang it in French and the verses are quite evocative.... the deceased loved one, the white dove.
