When Justice Jean Cote convicted a director of child services for Alberta's child welfare ministry of contempt of court, the judge offered a warning to the government. The department Richard Ouellet directed had (wrongfully, it turned out) seized a little boy from the foster family that had raised him from an infant, following false allegations of abuse, and would not return him.

When the foster mother sued, and the court ordered the child returned in January, Mr. Ouellet's department refused to comply for five months, ignoring the court order, until the judge ordered the director charged with contempt.

In sentencing Mr. Ouellet last week to eight days in jail (he can trade jail time for community service), Judge Cote found "disturbing" the evidence of deceit and "disobedience" within the ministry of Children and Youth Services.
