I started drawing about five years ago; I'm a self-taught artist - I never had an art course. I quickly gravitated toward doing portraits (the most difficult for artists!) with pencil.

If you watch my method in the Palin drawing, you can see that I work for a balance in shading = the "value" or light/dark areas change as I work on the drawing. It's a constantly changing process that finally reaches a finishing point when there's a balance across the entire drawing.

The other key element in my drawings is the idea of "waypoints". Instead of using the usual method of ovals, I approach the human face looking for exact placements of the facial features. Since there are over 6 billion of us on the planet, what makes us different from each other is actually very little - a minute measurement of corner locations. With the method that I devised, I can get a "dead-on" likeness that even professional artists find difficult in a portrait.
