Founding members of the Indie rock movement. Camper Van Beethoven formed in 1983. Independently released the following albums:
1985 Telephone Lanslide Free Victory.
This spawned the underground classic "take the skinheads bowling" eventually garnering national and international commercial airplay.
1986 II & III
1986 Camper Van Beethoven (self titled): a second dose of MTV airplay with "Good Guys and Bad Guys.
1987 Vampire Can Mating Oven
Signed to then still independent Virgin Records.
1988 Our Beloved Revolutionary Sweetheart. Commercial alternative radio and MTV latched onto Eye of Fatima, and Turquoise Jewelery.
1989 Key Lime Pie. Few bands manage this. A #1 college radio record while simultaneously recieving heavy commercial radio play, and Heavy MTV rotation (when MTV showed videos). the song was a cover of status quo's "pictures of matchstick men"

The band took an extended hiatus from 1990-1999.

They then secretly reformed in 1999 and made a series of fake "oddities" records. That is they recorded new material pretending it had come from the vault of unreleased stuff.

then in 2004 they gave up that pretension announced they had reformed and released New Roman Times.

New Roman times is a sly and wry critique of the Bush Regime, Iraq War, Culture Wars, and Religious Fundamentalism. It's disguised as a sci-fi alternate history rock opera about a war between the fundamentalist christian republic of texas and the republic of california.

It has been hailed one of their best works. Camper Van Beethoven joins a handful of other bands to release a reunion record that is as a good or better than anything they did together in their first incarnation.
