@willicat441 Is it more complex than, say, a Beethoven string quartet? The vocals are significantly less complex than a Bach cantata. Those get "pulled off" live all the time. Too complex for these guys, perhaps, but hardly too complex for live performance in general.

@everdrew It was written by Hoyt Axton. I think Steppenwolf recorded first (for Easy Rider), with Axton recording it in 1971 and Nina Simone in 1974. Axton performed it live for years before anyone recorded it.
