I am a Vet and served in OIF (Operation Iraqi Freedom) 2. I am against the occupation of Afghanistan and Iraq. The U.S. Government seems to be on a world domination movement and I can't stand it.

"For the second task related to aircraft impact, the aircraft impact damage to the exterior of the WTC towers could be visibly identified from video and photographic records. However, no visible information could be obtained for the extent of damage to the interior of the towers, including the structural systems (floors and core columns, partition walls,and interior building contents. Such information was needed for the subsequent fire dynamics simulations and post-impact structural analysis. In addition, for the fire dynamics modeling, the dispersion of the jet fuel and the location of combustible aircraft debris were required. The estimate of the extent of damage to the fireproofing on the structural steel in the towers due to impact was essential for the thermal and structural analysis. The aircraft impact damage analysis were the primary tool by which most of the information on the tower damage could be estimated."

"A method was developed using microscopic observations of paint cracking to determine whether steel members had experienced temperatures in excess of 250 °C. More than 170 areas were examined on 21 exterior panels. Note that these 21 panels represent only about 3 percent of the panels from fire involved floors, and that the results on these panels cannot be considered indicative of exposure of other panels. Only three locations had a positive result indicating that the steel and paint may have reached temperatures in excess of 250 °C (note that the exposure could have occurred pre- or post-collapse). These areas were:

WTC 1, east face, floor 98, column 210, inner web;
WTC 1, east face, column 236, spandrel; and
WTC 1, north face, floor 98, column 143, floor truss connector.

Annealing studies on recovered steels established the set of time and temperature conditions necessary to alter the steel microstructure. Based on the pre-collapse photographic evidence, the microstructures of steels known to have been exposed to the fires were characterized. These microstructures show no evidence of exposure to temperatures above 600 °C for any significant time.

Similar results, i.e., limited exposure if any above 250 °C, were found for the two core columns recovered from the fire affected floors, which had adequate paint for analysis. Note the perimeter and core columns examined were very limited in number and cannot be considered representative of the majority of the columns exposed to fire in the towers."

Coupons have been collected for metallurgical tests to determine the temperatures to which they were subjected and their steel The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is currently conducting environmental tests, abating asbestos as necessary, and shipping available pieces to its Gaithersburg, MD, facility for storage and further study. As of May 2002, a total of 41 steel pieces had been shipped to NIST. "

"Summary for Sample 1
1. The thinning of the steel occurred by a high-temperture corrosion due to a combination of oxidation and sulfidation.
2. Heating of the steel into a hot corrosive environment approaching 1,000 °C (1,800 °F) results in the formation of a eutectic mixture of iron, oxygen, and sulfur that liquefied the steel.
3. The sulfidation attack of steel grain boundaries accelerated the corrosion and erosion of the steel."

"It is possible and likely, however, that even if grain boundary melting did not occur, substantial penetration by a solid state diffusion mechanism would have occurred as evidenced by the high concentration of sulfides in the grain interiors near the oxide layer. Temperatures in this region of the steel were likely to be in the range of 700--800 °C (1,290--1,470 °F)."

"The unusual thinning of the member is most likely due to an attack of the steel by grain boundary penetration of sulfur forming sulfides that contain both iron and copper. Figures C-10, C-11, and C-12 show the region of severe corrosion at different levels of magnification. The origin of the steel shown in Figure C-9 is thought to be a high-yield-strength steel removed from a column member. The steel is a high-strength low-alloy (HSLA) steel containing copper."

"The severe corrosion and subsequent erosion of Samples 1 and 2 are a very unusual event. No clear explanation for the source of the sulfur has been identified. The rate of corrosion is also unknown. It is possible that this is the result of long-term heating in the ground following the collapse of the buildings. It is also possible that the phenomenon started prior to collapse and accelerated the weakening of the steel structure."

Structural steel starts to melt at these temperatures...
"The lowest temperature at which a plain carbon steel can begin to melt, its solidus, is 1130 °C. Steel never turns into a liquid below this temperature. Pure Iron ('Steel' with 0% Carbon) starts to melt at 1492 °C (2720 °F), and is completely liquid upon reaching 1539 °C (2802 °F). Steel with 2.1% Carbon by weight begins melting at 1130 °C (2066 °F), and is completely molten upon reaching 1315 °C (2400 °F). 'Steel' with more than 2.1% Carbon is no longer Steel, but is known as Cast iron."
