This is an article i wrote in an Indian news paper (when i was studying my BBM in India) after the tragic murder of 2 working women in India. It was a long article but they shortened it but it appeared as the special article of the day in the editorial column.
Make the use of 'hijab' universal
Bangalore has seen the tragic assault and murder of two women BPO workers, Prathiba and Tania Banerjee. Is this what women deserve? What should society and the Govt do about it? The status of women in Islam is often the target of attack. Though there is great wisdom behind te Islamic code of dressing or hijab, it is considered by many as a subjugation under islamic law. Such dresses don't invite the opposite sex to tease and molest.
If the Islamic Shariah is to be implemented by any govt on making the hijab compulsory for all women, and punishing a rapist or a murderer, all men will fear punishment, respect women and stop persecuting them.
The hijab thus doesn't degrade women but protects their modesty. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is an example of a country that implements the Shariah and therefore provides safety for both women and men.
