You know what? Richard Feynman acknowledges that he failed to understand why these things are. He mentioned that some physicists would guess the relationships. But at least they make predictions that can be tested.
String theory cannot be tested. Feynman said that string theory doesn't make predictions - it makes excuses.
The Higg's Boson is also a fantasy by your definition, but you could test it though it results in billions of dollars being spent on this. The problem with this thing is that it too came out of a description.
