About this user

Christopher L. Rowland began his interest in the arts by virtue of his environment. Surrounded by the landscape paintings of his grandfather Otto Rowland, Chris developed an interest in painting and a general curiosity of the world around him. Chris attended Victor Valley College where he received his A.A. degree in 1988. His focus was life drawing, photography and ceramics where he created many of his high fire sculptural objects. Feeling the need to expand his horizons he soon applied to Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles and was accepted into their Fine Arts department. There he was able to live and work in this community of other artists. While he pursued his painting and sculptural talents he also was introduced to video and film, which he felt would be a good trade to learn.
Chris received his B.F.A. degree in 1993, was published in Photographers Forum best of 1994 as well as having his first poem published.
After 2 years of working in the film industry, during which time was also an assistant to internationally known video artist Bill Viola, Chris decided to return to college and pursue a Masters degree in fine arts. Chris received his M.F.A. degree in 2000 and was also awarded into the "Who's Who among students in Universities and Colleges".
During his senior show Chris sold a painting making enough to explore Europe for a month enabling him to see the classic works he had only read about in art history books while attending college.
Since receiving his MFA, Chris introduced sound design and taught video classes at Otis College of Art and Design but wanted to commit more time to a documentary film he had been working on titled "The Voyage of Biosphere 2" written and directed by Dr. Roy Walford.
In 2003 Chris received a co-director credit on "Who Built Biosphere 2?" which was given a Communicators award of distinction.
In addition to these projects, Chris traveled to Kenya, Africa where he shot a documentary film about Biotechnology.
In 2007 Chris finished a biographical documentary, "Sign Posts of Dr. Roy Walford" which he wrote and directed about the life of the pioneer of the caloric restriction movement and doctor in Biosphere 2 during the first mission. "Sign Posts of Dr. Roy Walford" is now available through Netflix, Amazon, Best Buy, Blockbuster and Borders.
Other recently completed films are "Red Hope? The Blacklisting of Hope Foye" which received a Best Documentary nomination at the 2011 Pan African Film Festival. "Over the River", life of Lydia Maria Child, which was screened at Sony Studios.
While maintaining a rigid schedule Chris manages to paint rigorously, building a large body of work stretching over a period of 15 years. In 2003 Chris represented the United States at an artist residency in Macedonia where he now has 2 paintings in the permanent collection in the Contemporary Museum of Art in Skopje, Macedonia.
Chris exhibited his paintings at the Paulina Miller Gallery in Phoenix, Arizona for six years and had a show write up in Contact, a magazine for modern living.
The past couple years Chris has been exhibiting his work around the Los Angeles area, spaces such as CREATE:FIXATE and the L.A. downtown art walk. In 2009 Chris won the PVAC Trustees Award for a single painting. Chris' interest in art, culture and documentary film has allowed him the privilege to travel the world, exploring diverse cultures and learning more about the world around him.
