It is a Scottish song...the author is unknown. The reference...in the original song... to the Clyde is a clear reference to Scotland.

I played this song for my students...and they loved it. A couple of them even cried. We were studying the reasons for the Irish emigration to Canada and the US. It sure does tug at the heart-strings.

No... Ms. McKennitt has not stopped touring or performing. I am kicking myself for not making one of three performances last summer in the small city where she lives... Stratford, Ontario.

Yes... I understand that and it was not my intent to claim that ALL of her music is Celtic with a Middle Eastern feel. Many of her pieces have that feel because of the instruments used. You may also be familiar with the fact that Middle Eastern instruments were common in England....

Ummm...No... It was sung from a male perspective....and the "original" is lost in the history of Scotland. There are many versions of this song... each different in it's own way. The Celtic Woman version leaves out many of the lyrics. Good?... yes. One of my favourite versions is by Phil Coulter...
