About Me:

It's ok to question things. If something doesn't make sense, don't pretend that it does.

I'm a recovering christian, and am happy to say that I've been totally god-free for over 5 years now.

I was raised in church. To quote a famous song, I am "the son of a preacher man."

Since church was such an important part of our family, it is no mystery why I decided to follow in the faith. Consequently, I was a christian for 30 years and even served in the ministry. My pastime was studying the bible; I could quote entire books from memory.

I rejected all science that contradicted a literal interpretation of the bible. This, of course, included evolution. Without ever studying it, I was quick to refute its claims with quotes from my favorite creationist groups. I was arrogant; I thought I knew more than educated scientists.

My de-conversion was a slow, gradual process beginning 12 years ago. It culminated one glorious day when I was holding my eldest son. As I looked at him, I knew there was nothing he could ever do to me which would cause me to reject him. At that moment, I knew I was a better father than god, and that Jehovah could not possibly exist.

Some have told me that I was never truly a christian, but spent my life "playing church." I dismiss this as a ridiculous claim; how could they know my heart?

This is my evolution. Today, I am proud to call myself a Secular Humanist.

Cheers for making the critical thinking vids - along with QualiaSoup's vid they are an excellent intro to critical thinking. In fact I think they are pretty comprehensive, short of a full blown epistemology philosophy course :-) Subbed and favourited those 3 just for starters!

"recovering christian" Now thats funny and I know funny! I too have been clean for about 5 years. I would have sought truth sooner had cognitive dissonance not skewed the mind. Now I know the freedom that comes with an honest heart! Thanks for the friend invitation.

Evid3nc3 has made a truly astounding video series explaining his deconversion from christianity. If you have not seen, I can very much recommend it. Agnosticman77 has also made such a video series that is quite insightful

I personally like devonversion stories, as I was never religious myself, so those videos give me an insight into how severely mentally crippling living by a religion actually is.
