The Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act was passed Aug 2008 to protect children ages 12 and under from unsafe toys & garments containing hazardous parts & toxic lead paint. The law also affects children's books printed pre-1985 & kids' ATVs.
Testing for lead is cost prohibitive for small scale producers. Classic books are being thrown into landfills. Thrift shops are no longer selling children's clothing. Small handcrafters are being forced out of business. Even with a one year stay on testing & certification (two years for kids' ATVs) the CPSIA is creating a devastating financial impact in an already difficult economic climate.
