It's inherent in man to put value on inanimate objects. Neolithic man was picking up shells on a beach and producing early forms of jewelry with them. Then he discovered shiny metals like bronze, silver, gold which has captivated his senses ever since. It's no big surprise he places value on a piece of paper which offers him an illusory promise - he has had thousands of years of practice.
