Students at five of the district's largest high schools took part in the fitness challenge from October to the end of January 2012. Students from Barringer 9 Success Academy, Central, East Side, Weequahic, and West Side High Schools received the devices, which are sponsored by the MYTRAK company and Jeff Halevy, a well-known fitness coach. Students wore the devices to measure brisk walking, exercises, and sport activities at home and in school. The program included 1,500 high school freshmen, representing five different Newark high schools, competing against each other for the most minutes moved.
District physical education teachers, who received prior training on the monitoring devices, monitored student progress and submitted weekly reports until the culmination of the program. Students will be rewarded based on their level of activity with prizes which include Nets Basketball tickets and Zumba DVDs to designer apparel from ENYCE and high-end TRX Suspension Training equipment.
