Imaam ash-Shaafiee (rahimahullah) said, My ruling regarding the people of theological rhetoric is that they should be beaten with palm branches and shoes and led around the markets an it (should) be said: This is the punishment of those who have abandoned the Book and the Sunnah and taken to theological rhetoric.
Reported by al-Baghaawee in Sharh as-Sunnah (1/218).
Imaam Ahmad bin Hanbal [d.241H] - rahimahullaah - said: The fundamental of the Sunnah with us are: clinging to that which the Companions of the Messenger of Allaah [saullallaahualaihiwasallam] were upon, taking them as our examples to be followed, avoiding innovations, for every innovation is a misguidance. [Usool as-Sunnah (p.5)]
