About Where Film Meets Philosophy
Rather than capturing his thoughts in abstract treatises, Plato wrote his philosophy in dialogues, drawing upon the form of a play in order to capture the immediacy and ambiguity of conversation. Plato recognized that the real value of philosophy does not come from an apparently wise person who might tell you how to think -- but rather from the thoughts you discover for yourself when situations lead you to become confused about what you thought you knew. Film is the medium closest in cultural relevance and immediacy to what the Greek play was in the age of Plato. As I take it, film is not merely a complement to philosophical discussion, but can be one of the best sources of philosophical insight.
In my teaching I use films, and sometimes assign students to create films that reflect philosophical ideas. Here I'll be posting some of my students' work and maybe some of my own.
