@ithree6mafia -it's G for gelded, it means it doesn't have an aperture ring on the lens, so you can use it on a film camera (i use a 50mm af-s G lens on my old F4), you just can't use it in M or A modes (only S or P will work). you can't use on some of the older film cameras that are fully manual.

@whitemsk - depth of field is a product of the speed of the lens (the faster the lens, the shallower the depth of field). So look for a lens with a lower aperture value (the F number F/1.4, F2.8 etc). Also it may pay to think about exactly what kind of shooting you'll do, ie: macro, portrait, st...
